Print and Frame Information

General Information

After you review the information below, if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact us.
our framing quality

1. Print and Mat Size:

The mat surround greatly impacts the overall feel of the image and the final framed piece as a whole. Proper framing should enhance the image, drawing the viewer's eyes into the image, allowing the eye to wander around the image, but not outside it. We have sized the mats to increase in size accordingly to the size of the print. The wider mats work very well with photos.

The samples below show an 8x10 print framed in a 2 3/4" wide frame with no mat, 2 1/2" mat and a 4.1/2" mat. The matting is a double mat with an extra wide 3/4" reveal. The corresponding finish sizes are 13 1/2 x 15 1/2, 18 1/2 x 20 1/2 and 22 1/2 x 24 1/2. mat size variations

2. Image to use:

Much is written regarding file size and resulting image quality. Our experience shows us there are many factors that effect the overall image quality, such as exposure, lens quality, quality of the digital chip in the camera, camera software, etc., that are not revealed in just the file size. Simply put, some large files print poorly and some small files are exceptional. In addition, our quality equipment and software, pre-print individual file review and years of experience combine to produce great results from what may be considered a marginal image. So go ahead and send it to us. We guarantee we will never print an image that we believe to be sub-standard with out contacting you first.

Be sure to allow ample time for the image to upload. The time required depends on your file size and internet connection speed. If you are on a slow connection, with a large file, you may want to go and grab a cup of coffee! Your file will get to us in the time that it takes. You will know it is finished when you see the shopping cart.

3. Enhance or correct your image:

Adding an optional white border will allow transition space between the image and the mat. If ordered, we will add a 1/2" to 3/4" wide white border, depending on the print size. The white border will show in the final framed piece.

Be assured we review each image individually, correcting and enhancing where necessary to produce the best image possible. We do not just click 'auto correct buttons', but rather call upon our many years of experience and training to give you the best results.

Extra retouching comes into play when corrections go way beyond our normal service. Examples of this might be an extremely bad exposure or images shot with the wrong color setting, etc. It also includes complete retouching services to eliminate power wires, backgrounds or even "the ex"!

4. Paper choices:

You can choose from a selection of both fine art papers and traditional photo style papers. All have been chosen for their superb photographic image reproduction qualities and their archival properties. The images have been intentionally darkened down from their whiter appearance to better show the subtle texture differences.

Photo Premium Luster:

Epson's finest photo-reproduction paper. Slight surface luster enhances image sharpness & color snap. Use this to reproduce the most stunning colors for rich, vibrant results.

Photo Enhanced Matte Paper:

Epson's finest photo-reproduction paper. The matte surface softens and quiets images.  Use this to reproduce the most stunning colors for rich, subtle results.

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag:

100% cotton rag paper with a very smooth bright white finish. Provides excellent image reproduction, with the soft look of a fine art print without the surface texture.

Hahnemuhle William Turner:

Our absolute favorite fine art paper. 100% cotton rag water-color paper, moderately coarse texture with a natural white color. This paper has a nice "tooth" to it, reproduces extremely well, has a look of a fine art paper without a heavy texture pattern.

Hahnemuhle Torchon Paper:

100% rag water-color paper, moderately coarse texture with a natural white color. This paper has a distinct texture pattern to it that is very unique. Soft but distinct.

5 & 6. matting options:

We truly believe all prints should be matted. If you have chosen matting, the base price includes a top mat of your choice. The 6-ply extra thick mat option works very well with all images, giving the final piece an increase in visual depth. We highly suggest using a white to neutral mat for the top mat, though color can be used at your choosing. The optional bottom mat ads visual interest and really can dress up the finished piece. Be subtle with either the same color mat, or one darker but of similar tonality or make a bolder impression with a strong color. The standard reveal of the bottom mat is 1/4". You can choose to have a wider reveal, bringing the bottom mat more into play. This technique works very well with using the same color mat for both top and bottom, as shown above in step 1.

7. mounting options:

Both methods offered, dry mounting and linen hinging, are accomplished with acid-free materials. For the conservation-framing purist, hinging is the only choice as it is completely reversible, helping to retain the full print value. But its drawback is the print may become wavy over time, especially in areas of high humidity. Dry mounting is the best way to go to sustain a beautiful lasting flat image. Unless you believe you have prints that may someday be collectable works of art, we always suggest our acid-free dry mounting.

8. glazing options:

Most people take glazing for granted, believing that it is all the same. Not true! Standard glass blocks less than 45% of UV radiation. This radiation, found in both natural and artificial light, causes irreversible damage to all prints. The choices we offer have much higher UV blocking qualities, with our Premium Clear Acrylite coming in at 66% and our Conservation Acrylite choices at 98%. We highly recommend an upgrade to conservation grade for any print you want to last for years and years.
